Miseducation of Brown Girls Book List

The Dinner Table Doc worked with a group of young women and girls who were not able to participate in the summer camp's weekly workshops the opportunity to participate by helping us culminate a book list for black and brown girls, so that they can inspire and empower each other. 

For their participation they received a digital certificate and a Barnes and Noble gift card or book. 

My favorite book that centers life of a black or brown girl to me I will recommend "Becoming by Ms. Obama." I truly love this book . The reason is because I truly gives me hope and it inspires me has a brown girl that was born in Brooklyn N.Y. It gives me hope to inspire more and dont lose hope. No matter your surroundings you could inspire to be at the top college and never give up. Always strive to be the best. This book is truly a excellent book I truly loved to read and I will recommend to anyone to read.

"Children of Blood and Bone," and the Legacy of Orisha series, by Toni Adeyemi centers around a magical young protagonist named Zélie Adebola. The world of this YA novel is rich with West African folklore and magic. Then, of course, the writing is stellar, and the plot is packed with action, intrigue, betrayal, fear, and the infinite, indisputable power of the Black female heroines. This book means so much to me, because I'm a fantasy lover.

​Since first grade, I've been known to always have a book on me--always. In the car, in school, at doctors' appointments. On an occasion (a fancy dinner with my mom and her college friend), I lugged along two fat YA novels, because I only had 20 pages left in the first, and I could not be left book-less. The problem: in each of my novels, the main character was a white female. Oftentimes, all of the characters were white. They were like me in some ways, but unlike me in many others. I started to wish and dream that I could look, act, and live like them -- that I could change an important part of me and dim my Black girl magic to be more like my favorite characters. So, when COBAB blew up nationally in 2018, I came to a wonderful revelation. I realized how deprived I'd been, and how much magic exists in every culture, every body. In a thoroughly white-washed world, we need every young Black and brown girl to know this.
