Black Women as CEOs of Tech Startups? Meet Chaymeriyia Moncrief

Written By Princess Miller

At the ripe age of 24 years old, there stands a woman who serves as the brains behind two very successful businesses – her name is Chaymeriyia Moncrief. A graduate of Alabama State University with a degree in business management and a minor in computer science, Moncrief opened the award-winning branding agency Sxteen Design Studio in 2016. However, her success did not stop her ambition. This past December, she has just launched her most recent business venture, Tesix Wireless Network, a telecommunications startup with her two younger sisters.

Some may ask, why Moncrief would decide to start a phone network company, especially considering the bigger, more well known, companies would serve as her competition. And the answer to this is simple. She was tired of experiencing problems with other phone companies and had finally reached her breaking point. Her business idea had been in the works for five years prior and in mid-2018 she announced the launch of Tesix Wireless. Thenin December 2018, she launched her business. She gained a starting investment of $1.5 million along with an acquisition offer of $4.4 million, leaving the company with a value of $5.9 million. With this much money, the business can only gain more value and interest in the future.

Currently, Tesix has two phone plans. The first is Tesix Business, a business plan for solo-entrepreneurs and small businesses. The second, is the SIM Kit, for the individual. The company offers less competitive rates, and currently has a deal with Netflix to watch free for six months. It is amazing to think that this new venture was started out of frustration of other companies and will to make a change. And the fact that, the brains behind this operation was a young black woman is so inspiring.
