5 Ways To Be More Involved on Campus this Year

Written by Nah’Ja Washington

Every summer before moving back on campus I make a list of things I want to accomplish that year, and every year “getting more involved on campus” is at the top of that list. Being involved on campus is important in any capacity and the hardest part is getting started.

  1. Getting Started- It can be intimidating to walk into a room of people you don’t know, however it is important to realize that you all share a common interest. Despite this, before you enter the room you have to find it. Researching the resources offered on your campus is the best way to find clubs or leadership positions that you’re interested in.

  2. Finding Your Fit- So you’ve found the club you’re interested in yet it still is not your favorite, that’s okay! You have plenty of time to experience the different clubs on your campus and find which one you enjoy most. Attending an on campus club fair is a great way to experience several clubs at once and allows you to choose which one you think would best fit your interest.

  3. Don’t Be Afraid To Try New Things On Your Own- Getting involved is a great way to make new friends, but that doesn’t mean you have to lose the ones you already have. You and your friends all have interests of your own and shouldn’t be afraid of exploring them. It may be scary at first to be alone, however you will soon make more friends.

  4. Researching Doesn’t Stop There- Think of clubs as a jumping point for finding more opportunities on campus. Being involved in clubs can lead to volunteer, leadership, and even internship opportunities. It is important that you attend every club meeting to get the most out of what information they have to offer.

  5. Staying Committed- Once you start attending a club’s meetings it is important that you stay committed to attending them. Staying committed to a club can lead to a leadership position within the club such as secretary or president.

Being involved is a great way to leave your mark on your college’s campus. However it can be intimidating at first. There are plenty of ways to get involved besides clubs such as on campus jobs and intramural sports, however they all require the same first step, researching.  Find out what is the best fit for you and stick with it! Being involved in any shape or form is a very rewarding experience and you won’t regret it.
