Being a black women in this day and age can be tiring. After centuries of being the most unwanted people in America, a lot of us have come to internalized that hatred and deny the need for self care. Little do people know that being a black women comes with high expectations and challenges that we have to overcome on a daily basis. It can become burdening and takes a toll on our mental health, so here are a few tips The Dinner Table can offer on your journey to self care. #1 Check in on your well being Photo Courtesy of Create Her Stock Are you getting enough sleep? Have you been eating a lot of junk? I know it’s been said many times before, but incorporating a healthier lifestyle will make a difference. Something as simple as drinking more water can have you more awake, clear up your skin, and improve your mood. Doctors recommend that adults get eight hours of sleep every night. This can be hard for the queens out there who are just too busy slaying, but it’s important to make time for rest so that you can wake up feeling rejuvenated and continue slaying! #2 Cut off all of the negativity Photo Courtesy of Create Her Stock Sometimes we don’t notice the things that weigh us down, which makes it harder to weed out the negativity. But once you find the source, don’t hesitate to cut it off. This can be a person, your job, or a habit. If it’s your job that’s giving you trouble, don’t be afraid to find your true passion and pursue it. Don’t put yourself in a box; you’re a human being with unlimited potential, you can do anything if you put your mind to it. However, if it’s a person that’s putting you down, don’t be afraid to cut he/she off too. People who truly care for you want to see you thrive, not hold you down. #3 Find support through your peers Photo Courtesy of Create Her Stock Friends are great. They’re always there for you when you need them, and always ready to give you their overwhelming support. We know that the the best thing that can help black women is the support from other black women. Knowing that there are other people like you, who are going through it too, will help validate your struggles and bring you reassurance that things will get better. #4 Accept your vulnerabilitie Photo Courtesy of Create Her Stock Everybody gets sad every now and then. Sometimes you might want to cut yourself off from the outside world and binge watch Netflix, and that’s okay. There’s this stigma in the black community on vulnerability; we’re expected to always have our guard up and be strong. Not only can this be tiring, but it can take a toll on your mental health. It’s okay to talk about the things that make you sad, and the things make you feel disadvantaged. It’s a part of being human, and it’s not just for white people. #5 Embrace your authentic self Photo Courtesy of Create Her Stock This new all-natural movement is here to push black women to embrace their authentic beauty and love their natural self. This means don’t be afraid to sprinkle a bit of that #blackgirlmagic everywhere you go. Wear your hair natural, dye it all the different colors you want, reveal your vulnerabilities, let the world know that you are a black women that you won’t stop slaying. It’s not a crime to be unapologetically black and to love yourself while doing it. It can be done, and we should aim for it! Written By: Lidia Abraha

Thank you for this post! I have been searching for along time trying to decide what to do without feeling guilty about what I want and needed to make me feel free happy and complete . Most of my life I have did what others wanted me to do because I felt that making sure others were happy was the right thing to do. I was the one who was hurting and suffering. I believe I have found my purpose I love teaching and encouraging and motivating others. I make gifts baskets that I pray about and are inspired by the holy spirit. Also I would like to become a speaker
